Could this be coccidiosis?

I am coming up on year 4 of chicken raising, and thankfully have never had to deal with coccidia. But right now I have a chick (just over two months) who all of the sudden is acting very off. He is puffed up and slow, broadcasting all the signs of “I don’t feel good”. Unfortunately I am not seeing a single other symptom. No respiratory signs, no bloody stool (his look completely normal), he still eats and drinks independently, and his crop consistency is just fine. I put some Corid in their water but wouldn’t have thought coccidiosis since they’re all on medicated finisher. Thoughts?

He's at the right age for it and he does looks like mine did when they had it. Medicated feed won't prevent it. It helps their bodies develop immunity and hopefully manage the load if they do get sick.

The Corid in the water is great. He looks like he feels pretty bad. You might want to consider a Corid drench.

I'm very new to chickens, so you will want to get others' thoughts too. I'm just sharing from my experience within the last 2 weeks of dealing with coccidiosis. I did not lose anyone. So if you're treating early, his chances are good.

Like putting it on the food?

You give them Corid straight to the beak in a syringe with no needle. The dose is 0.1ml per pound. Or if he doesn't weigh a pound (mine didn't) this is a screenshot of the math I used.

My bird weighed 13 ounces. You'll need to weigh yours. If he weighs a full pound or more, use the 0.1ml/pound. Or 0.02ml per 100 grams of weight. If not a pound, get his weight in grams and follow that math in the picture.

I just put a drop at a time on the side or tip of their beaks, avoiding nostrils. They swallowed it with no trouble. It worked fast, and there was improvement in a few hours and by day 2 they were back to normal. You can do this in addition to treating their water. You can do it once or twice per day, up to 3 days, is what I was told. I went with twice per day for 3 days. Corid is pretty safe. Coccidiosis is not.

I had a tough case of it. I treated water for 5 days and thought we were good. 2 days later, sick birds again. I did the drench on 3 that were visibly ill, like yours. And I treated the water for 7 days that time. No issues since.

He was just 10 grams heavier than that example you posted, so I gave him .1 ML. Hopefully that gives him a boost.

The direct oral drench can be given 2X a day for 3days at a rate of 0.10ml per pound of weight.

This is in addition to him drinking the Mixed Corid water throughout the day. Make sure he's drinking, if he's not, then syringe the mixed water into him too.

Is his crop emptying overnight? Photos of his droppings may be helpful.

Liquid Corid dose is 2tsp or Powdered Corid Dose is 1 1/2tsp per gallon of water given for 5-7 days as the only source of drinking water.
Do not add any extra vitamins/electrolytes that contain B1(Thiamine) to food or water during the course of treatment.

I would think so. It was recommended to me to round my boy's dose up to 0.1ml, so I think that should be just fine for yours.

How is he doing this morning?

Like Wyorp Rock said, make sure his crop is emptying overnight. You can also use that as a baseline to make sure he's taking in feed through the day, by feeling to see if it is enlarging by afternoon. I would just stand in the corner of the run and make sure mine were eating and drinking, at least every other hour I would go down there.

I change their water first thing in the morning and again late afternoon because the way the sun shines into their run in the afternoon, it hits the water and I don't want it to get too warm. I gave the Corid drench at those times, for the 3 full days. I hope it helps your guy recover quickly!

He’s acting a lot perkier today. His crop felt pretty normal yesterday. It was the consistency of my healthy birds, and this morning he is eating with them right now. I watched him have both regular and cecal poops- both were the same color and consistency of my healthy adults. I gave him the drench and corid water yesterday and he’s still consuming it today. Do I need to continue drenching or is the water source fine? He’s never stopped eating or drinking.

He’s a lot perkier today. If I hadn’t noticed him being off yesterday I probably wouldn’t have known anything was wrong.
