Covered run if cooped up at night?

We have a covered run, it is attached to our coop, they can come and go as they please in the run, and back into the coop. I like it cuz they can go out on a rainy day, and still be out side. We let them out to free range when we are home to watch. I don't lock mine in at night since we attached the covered run. Our neighbors run is uncovered and they do not lock them up at night, they haven't had any trouble.
I feel safer with my set up!

Many thanks guys. What I'm getting is that if the run is covered, the chickens have the freedom to come and go into the coop at night as they please, and I don't have to be concerned with what might be getting in. During cold weather I can lock them up to better control the temp in the coop; during mild weather, if the run is covered and secure, I can leave it open.

Makes sense to me!

Thanks so much.
