Coyote Attack

I believe in most states (if not all) you can SHOOT TO KILL coyotes. Here in NC and SC the state actually PAYS YOU TO KILL THEM! That's how bad it is. You bring them a pelt and get $$$. They are considered a highly invasive species.

Go to your state’s game, fish & parks website. You should be able to find the information you want there. We apply for a varmint permit (free in SD) and we’re good to go. DH has removed three or four from the local population so far this year, all of them sneaking around my birds. They’re all in electric poultry netting for the summer except the meat birds, who are safely tractored, but still...

If you can’t find your way around the website, give them a call. The SD folks are all super helpful... I’ll bet they are in your state as well. If you need fire power, be sure to get something big enough to get a clean kill. A .22 isn’t always up to the task. (Bad experience there.)

I don't really need any advice, I'm just heartsick. After losing one hen on Saturday to sour crop complications, two coyotes snatched the last of my original flock...the hen I've had the longest. Now my 2 year-old Roo and my four 5 month pullets are to forever remained locked in their 12' x 6' covered dog run attached to a small 6' x 6' raised coop, (not including the depth of the nesting boxes on each side.)

We've never had a coyote problem so that wasn't on the list of predators I've worried about. I'm so angry I could scream! I want to find out what the laws are and go on a coyote hunt if it's legal. If anyone has any suggestions about ways to make sure my coop set up is secure, I'd be happy to hear them.

Thank you for reading my vent. I'm gutted by this. :(
I am from southern Indiana and my family still resides there. When brother has predator issues, even with Coyotes, he shoots them. Generally, Coyotes are not inclined to keep coming back on a regular basis like a fox does for just a few chickens. They have larger territories that must be enforced and they hunt while enforcing. He keeps a rifle handy for the rare occasions when they come into range. They are very wary.

A few months back I had a fox get my most precious bird during the middle of the day while she was out. I do have game cameras around on my property. Most of the predators here come out at night. Most every night I see one, usually a coyote on at least one of the game cameras.
