I got home from a deer hunting trip Saturday evening and guess what.........My wife tells me that Friday night she hears something outside. She opens the back door and flips on the outside light..........and on top of our bantam pens is a coyote scratching on the tops of the pens trying to get to the chickens! Our neighbor told us that they had heard their birds raising cain and went outside only to find 5 coyotes trying to get into their chicken pens. I'm not too worried that they can get to mine but, I'm worried about letting our small dogs out to do their business. Guess it would be a good idea to go out with them!

Gosh, i don't know the game laws in your state. Here we would discourage them by applying our hunting knowledge in the direction of the culprit.... Good Luck!

that's terrible. that sounds pretty upfront for a coyote. i usually think of them as opportunists. good luck.

OK coyotes did not fall off the last turnip truck, they are professional hunters. If you saw five there are more. And guess what...... they will be watching! Even if you are a good shot, you will in all probability will get one. The rest will vacate and will come back, but you will not see them most likely. I have hunted them with decoys and calls. You rarely get the same coyote to fall for the same trick twice. Different ones maybe, but any you shoot at and miss will be very stealthy but will return to the food source if they get hungry enough. Watch the pets closely and do not let them get out of your sight if you value them. They will come to bait( ie, your chickens) in the daylight if not challenged or detered. They will also hunt at night.

Now that, and a buck fifty will get you coffee at Micky-D's

Hope it is of some help,

Randy

As Randy said, coyotes are smart critters. This is one of the only times I will advise the use of poison. This has to be done in an area that all other animals can't have access to. You must have a bait that is large enough for all the coyotes to feed on and enough poison to kill all of them.
It is the only way to keep them from getting your chickens, pets and possibly your children. Once you have seen that they have been at the bait, you must burn or bury the remaining bait. If done properly you only need to do it once. A road kill deer works the best and it is large enough. If you try this method, you must use the uppermost care to see that a stray dog or cat doesn't find the bait first.

Get a nice big dog mabe a mastiff or a pyranesse or go to the pound and see what you can get as long as its is big and protective it will work. well actualy since you have alot of cyots get a pair of huge dogs.
