Sadly, this morning a coyote ate one of our chickens and ran off with another (we are now down to three, a banty and two regular size hens). Their house and tiny pen is too little for them to just hang out in it all day, they have always been free range. This week our first baby goats are due and my partner has hurt his back building the nursery so I am completing it very slowly and terribly so we dont have time to add fencing just now. We have only heard coyotes once before, and we are in an area where you cannot fire a gun. I can get my hands on a pellet gun if you think that would work. Our landlord also refuses to let us get a dog. Any ideas on how to get rid of this pest/protect my remaining ladies? Thank you in advance!!!

Well, a gun wont help much unless you actually see the coyote taking a chicken. I would say put up a few lines of electric fence around the perimeter of where the chickens free range. Or just expand their run. Maybe get a few night eye type things to make the coyotes think there is a bigger predator in the area.

Try wolf urine. Wolves and coyotes are mortal enemies, coyotes being in the losing end of the deal most of the time. No personal experience with it though. Someone here I am sure as tried it though.
