Eastern Shore - my happy place...
I need help. Has anyone seen anything like this on their chickens. I don't have a pic yet but will post one as soon as I can. 1 year old healthy Barred Rock rooster has hard, dry, cracked areas on the back of both legs just above his rear toe. Also, his rear (only his rear) toes are thick and dry and cracked as well. If I try to rub the dry, raised up, and cracked skin off, it will bleed. He seems sore when he walks and will stand holding up a leg, then the other. No other signs of illness. I thought Scaly leg mites and treated him with spot on Ivermectin twice now (good healthy doses both times). I also rubbed his legs down in vasoline with poultry dust mixed in for weeks. No change except it looks less dry. As soon as I stop, it goes right back to dry, hard and cracked areas. The rest of his legs look normal. No other chickens have this. Any ideas? I know a picture is needed and will get that ASAP. I have also been putting Blu-cote on the areas in hopes it will help. it kind of looks like a really ugy wart or maybe a really nasty calluse. Any ideas is very much appreciated.

One more thing I forgot to list, his comb looks a slight bit darker red than it should. Slightly purple-ish. He is a layed back rooster and does not run around much. Hangs close to the hen house most of the day (they are free range). Now I am starting to wonder if maybe him being a "home body" is a sign that something may not be right with him....

Could he be rubbing it against the roost when he sleeps? Purple-ish comb can indicate shortness of breath and/or heart problems. Is he eating enough? Perhaps he's not getting proper nutrition?

When he was about 4 weeks old, I could hear him breathing when I would be down close to him cleaning the brooder etc. Never noticed that with any other chicks I have raised. When I hold him to put blue cote on him, he breaths a little labored. I thought maybe was rubbing backs of his feet on a perch but I watched him for a while and it's not that. It is on both legs, exact same spot and looks like a really bad calluse that has cracked open. So weird.

Spurs are in already. The spots look like really cracked calluses just below spurs on the exact back of each leg. spots are the size of a lima bean. I treated him with the spot on Ivermectin again this morning thinking again that maybe it is scaly leg mites. (no one else is effected thought). He was not happy being held down to be treated and since I did not have help so early in the morning, pictures were not possible. It is not raw, it looks like dry, cracky, over growth. Like a callus just not smooth - jagged appearance. It also extends down each rear toe and is also consentrated around the toe nail. Frustrating. He has been extremely tolerant of me trying different treatments. I just wish I could figure out what the heck it is and get rid of it. Was hoping some one on here had something similar and could tell me what they did to help. Ugh.....

We have been researching and googling every possible cause of the foot/toe problems for our rooster. After the second scaly leg mite treatment, the hard black crusty areas on the back of his legs has definitely gotten much better. Now, his middle toe is swollen and lumpy looking on one foot. He is holding that leg up and limping some on it as well. We checked is foot for any sign that it might be bumble foot (we have dealt with bumbler foot several times before so know what to look for and how to treat). Definitely not bumble foot. His toe, the front big toe, is swollen and very sore. After looking at tons of pictures etc, we are pretty certain he has gout. My hubby has severe gout and he is able to keep it in check by daily tart cherry. Takes a while to get it under control but the tart cherry is the only thing that works for him. So, we gave our rooster some tart cherry yesterday and plan on giving it to him daily. He is such a good rooster and although does not like being handled, he does tolerate it very well and also took the tart cherry very well. We opened up two capsules and mixed it with 1 tablespoon of water. Put it in his mouth with a syringe and he took it right down. Was not happy about the whole experience but was a good boy about it. We have several roosters but he is definitely our favorite. He is very gentle and actually likes people. Likes to be petted and talked to. Cool guy.
OK, so after all this rambling, I would like to know - ANYONE ELSE GIVE TART CHERRY? What form of it do you give? How do you give it? If you use the capsules, how many and how often?

Can you please post some photos of his legs and feet? Bottom of the feet too please.

His toe, the front big toe, is swollen and very sore.
