Hello,
My name is Shawna and it is so awesome to be apart of the BackYard Chickens community! Please allow me to introduce myself!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm not brand new to chickens and have learned more then I ever thought I would ever want to know. However, there is so much I have to learn and I can't be more thrilled to do so here! I have been hatching and raising chickens for about five years now. I started raising chickens with my father, Virgil. I moved in with him five years ago after my mother passed away. We were grief stricken and I was pretty desperate to fill my Dad's day with something fun and uplifting. We fell in love with them and haven't came back down yet!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
At last count about 90.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I know that I have silkies, a few barnyard mixes, buff orpingtons, rir, Easter eggers, olive eggers, a blue Andalusian, standard barred Cochin, barred rocks, an Isa brown rooster, and I just received my barnyard surprise box from Cackle Hatchery so I have about 45 new breeds to discover and enjoy!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love my chickens. I really do. Everything from the hatching process to the way the different pens look and smell better after I put in new pine chips. I can't choose only one thing that is my favorite.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Hmmm...well these chickens pretty much take up my every available waking moment but I love to read, bake, go to the movies, and have lunch with my friends.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I live with my Dad and boyfriend. We tend a little hobby farm with ducks and geese as well as the chickens. Our five dogs and cat round out our family quite nicely and I keep reminding my boyfriend that "no, we don't want 6 dogs". For money I work at a aerospace material manufacturing plant 12 hours on a rotating shift.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC when I googled a problem I was having with my chicks five years ago. I finally joined when I felt that I really wanted and needed to be apart of this community.
