Today is day 20. A perfectly respectable time for chicks to start to hatch. But, why are there two chicks and two empty eggs?
Oh that's right, those little buggers hatched day 19, something I've never had happen. Right after lockdown, those two loony birds were quietly peeping to each other, planning their early escape. Of course, these two are both yellowy-downed, while I had been hoping and praying for more colour in our flock.
Now their siblings are still pretty firmly ensconsed in their dark eggs, but about a third are indeed pipped.
I keep checking the 'bator every 20 minutes or so....good thing I am not going to be home the rest of the day...
But now I need names for these two lunatics. They are both sired by my (recessive) white Rock (yeah, I know. I want colour? Shouldn't have a white bird covering...) One, the single-combed who hatched second, I have no clue as to the dam. The other, the first to hatch, has a funky rosecomb. It is more silvery down than yellow, so I don't know what is going on there. Her (
) dam is a homemade, homegrown black sex-link (GLW x BR) who is phenotypically completely black... Should be very interesting to see this one grow out!
