I have 2 SLW. They most always fly out of or into the coop. They hate for me to pick them up. I get a good look at their feet and eyes as they perch above the open ( down) coop door. And I can listen to them for respiratory issues. No problems with eating or drinking. Poop looks good. But let me reach out my hands to pick them up and they are awaaaaay. Can fly a fair distance.

So this morning I was feeding them in the snow. Went to move a dish bent over and one of them jumped right on my back. Not mean just a good place to perch I guess. Their nails are long and I could feel them but they weren't digging into my flesh. Tried to wiggle a little bit but nope she wouldn't get off me. When I stood up, because my back was killing me, she had to jump off. I was so surprised by this as they usually keep their distance.

Mine do different things at different times. I do not have an SLW. Each bird will interact differently but they get used to you and will use you as a perch. Mine will climb up on my arm while cleaning sometimes and then want to perch there for a bit then fly off. I just take the interaction. Mine are getting used to holding as I do weekly checks head to toe to make sure they look ok and nothing new. I use this time to cuddle with them and calmly hold in crook of my arm to get them used to interaction. They would perch on my finger as a little baby chick. In nicer weather I sit out with them and they hop up on my lap. Like to look at my phone and peck it if I have it with me. They like shiny things.

If I'm lucky and quick I can get one to hold. But they squawk so loudly I'm afraid my Tree Hugging neighbor will "report" me. She a young woman but acts like an old biddy. They squirm, claw, try to fly, and generally act like I'm killing them OMG

Not all chickens like to be picked up or held. The one that flew onto your back must feel comfortable with you. Sometimes we just have to settle for that.

Oh don't get me wrong I love that she decided to perch on my back. Means she getting to trust me. So I think that soon I'll be able to pick her up more.
