Cream Legbar Lethargic, White around ears (?)

JoM

In the Brooder
Hello - My Cream Legbar has been acting very lethargic for the last 4 -5 days. She is about 12 weeks old. I did remove her from my main coop where I have 5 other hens that are all doing well. She has been walking around with at least one eye closed most of the time, and sometimes both, and seems to be sleeping quite a bit. Last Friday, the day I separated her, I had to go into the coop to get her, as she did not come out with the other hens at daybreak. She seems to be eating and drinking, her poop is loose, but I don't see any signs of blood or anything. I am attaching a picture, as you can see some white on what I think is her ear (sorry, I am new to having chickens!), this is on both sides of her head. This white "stuff" is new, just appeared yesterday. I'm not sure what to do with her, she is so sweet, I would hate to lose her. Any advice is appreciated. I have been putting some Zyfend A in her water, I know that wouldn't cure anything but I had some and figured it wouldn't hurt.

Could you get a picture of her ear in focus, and maybe a picture of her loose poop? With her earlobes turning white on both sides, it may be normal coloring. Some chickens do have white in their earlobes. I doubt that it would be caused by favus (fungus) unless you are seeing a white chaulky coloring on her head or face.

What are you feeding her? Are you giving any probiotics in her food, or does her feed have them listed on the label? At her age I would consider treating her with Corid for possible coccidiosis for 5-7 days. Dosage is 2 tsp of Corid Liuid or 1.5 tsp of the powder per gallon of water changed daily. It is safe to treat your other birds.

If you have a regular vet who would test a sample of her droppings for coccidia and worms, that would be helpful, but call ahead to ask. For worming, I would recommend giving SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer or Valbazen.

Never mind about the ear, I think you are right, that may just be her normal coloring. I went back and looked at another picture of her, from when I first got her, and the white is there, I just didn't really notice it before.

Her food is Purina Premium Poultry Feed Start & Grow non-medicated. It says on the bag that it has prebiotics and probiotics, but I couldn't really see where it listed what they were exactly.

I will look into the Corid and see if I can get some - is that like a general antibiotic? Do you think it is ok to put her back in with the other hens, or should I wait until she seems like she is feeling better?

I will try to get a picture of her poop - she did not go up into the coop last night, so I cant get a picture that way. I'll try to get one today.

Thank you so much!
