After looking at my xrays, my new dentist told me I have major bone loss. I was shocked when she showed me where the bone should have been. She said that I needed bone graphs. Do they use real bone? If so where does the bone come from?

This sounds very strange. I would certainly ask for a second opinion on that.

Actually it's pretty standard; bone grafts are a common dental procedure. However, make sure the person doing it is good, preferably an oral surgeon and not a regular family dentist. (some of the later are extremely good, but some only do cavities and root canals).

My wife had bone grafts prior to being able to get implants. Normally (but not always) they take a bit of bone from the patients chin.

Chickens, I know they do grafts now for jawbones, but am uncertain as to how or where they obtain the material to do the grafts. Once teeth are pulled that area of the bone becomes "no longer necessary" as it's main purpose was to support the tooth (at least that's how a dentist and oral surgeon explained it to me, as I suffer a little bone loss from a couple of teeth that were removed years ago) so the bone begins to recede. Of course if the bone deteoriates enough it can cause an entirely new set of problems.
