Hello, I will preface this by saying this chick is not even 24 hours old yet. But I am super invested in it so I need to know! I hatched him myself and had to do some assisting as his egg was saddled. It was quite the emotional roller coaster.

So, long story short. I hatched himself with shipped eggs so I know for sure what egg he came out of. Looks like a crele legbar egg (I’ll attach a pic of the egg). But does he look like a legbar to you??? Anyone experienced with the breed? Is it possible it’s something else with an egg that looks the same?? He just does not look anything like my other crele legbars that have hatched. Guessing if it is one it’s a boy since it’s lighter and no chipmunk stripes on the back but honestly does not look like the boys either. I’ll attach pics of the others in the comments.

And I know for sure it came out of this egg since I’ve spent a huge amount of time obsessing over this chick and it’s egg the last 48 hours lol.

There's no real way to tell for sure if these are pure legbar chicks. But you're right, if the one in question is a pure Legbar then it is a male.

If they were sold as pure Legbars I would assume they are for now. If not, they could easily be mixes.

Ok it’s fluffed out more and I think I know why it looks so different! It’s got to be an opal legbar chick, not crele legbar! The breeder does have some opal legbars as well!

So is this female or male? I know they are autosexing but the differences are slight. I am actually thinking female now? I can distinctly see three stripes and there’s a v shaped darker patch on the head and no white spot.

Hi there. Just seeing this now so I would guess you found out it was a female. She has longer eyeliner than the males. I just hatched 20 legbars which are a new breed for me. I ended up with 2 Opal pullets. I’m still trying to figure out what an opal cockerel looks like. I hatched 9 males and they all pretty much have the same barred coloring. Looks like you have the same incubator as me, Chick Cozy?

You are exactly right on everything! She is an opal pullet and I do have a chick cozy incubator!

What threw me is I forgot the breeder also had opal legbars, I was just expecting cream or crele legbars. So the lighter colouring threw me off! I lucked out and got one of each cream, crele and opal pullets!

They are feisty girls!

I did 4 hatches with my incubator this spring and it worked so well for me!

Attaching a pic of all three legbars!

What a great picture of the three side by side! So cute and lots of personality. Did you keep any cockerels? I’m going to try to keep 1 or 2 of the 9 males that hatched. I’ve never kept roosters before so entering new territory.

I was really pleased with the Chick cozy incubator too. 20 of the 22 eggs hatched and it was my first time incubating. How many eggs did you put in per hatch?

I hatched 5 legbars and only 2 were roosters, think it’s only breed I hatched where I got more pullets! I gave them to a friend. Our current set up isn’t huge so I haven’t kept any roosters. I definitely want to try it out in the future though. I have grand plans for building a second coop and a big grow out pen! Maybe a bachelor coop too lol!

My first time using it was my first time hatching, so I only put 6 eggs in, 4 hatched (one pullet only!) the second batch were shipped eggs and had a lot of saddled air sacs. Only 6/16 hatched. This was my most disappointing round, but I think it was the eggs, not the incubator. Only one pullet from that round as well lol. Then I put 24 eggs in, I pulled out a few that weren’t fertile and 20 eggs made it to lockdown, 19/20 hatched! This is the hatch where I got the legbars. I think 11/19 are pullets too. They are almost 10 weeks old now.

The last round I did were just bym eggs for my friend. 7/10 hatched. I also put 4 eggs under my broody hens at the same time and 2 of them hatched! It’s been so cute seeing those little ones out with the mamas!

Wow, you really put it to the test in a short time! I’ve heard that mailed eggs are disappointing and hardly worth the time and effort.

I also had a broody hen at the time of incubating but was advised I’d need a third separated space if she hatched successfully. I let her visit the little ones and it was interesting seeing her display her motherly skills to them. Seems to have broken her broody behaviour in the nest box too. I look forward to experiencing the natural hatch next time.
