Qwackers, my special needs duckling, was picked on pretty badly while I was at work today. I noticed that my Black East Indie, Indie, was nipping at Qwackers and my Khaki Campbell, Raj, last night in the tub. Today I come home to this and Indie had white feathers stuck to his bill.
Qwackers is being treated for wry neck, caused by swelling in her brain, for the past 3 weeks. She is being weaned off of the steroids this week, and gets nutri drench in her water.
What can a clean this area with? Is there a antibiotic ointment I should apply? In this injured area she has no skull and her brain protrudes higher than the rest of her head.
This was her last night, still wet from the bathtub

This is her now.

She is acting normal (for her) and doesn't seem to be in pain. I have separated her and will be re homing Indie. Raj seems fine, no missing feathers.

I am so sorry this has happened to Qwackers thank goodness you are saying is is still acting okay, neo sporin or triple antibiotic will work and when you can get some Veterycin spray from TSC it can be sprayed safely around the face and helps with wounds and infections but the neo or triple antibiotic will work for now.

Thanks Miss Lydia. I'm going to see if tractor supply is open today.
I am going to get in contact with the man I bought Indie from and see if he will take him back, or help me find someone that will take good care of him. I guess this is normal "drake" behavior? Maybe because he senses that Qwackers is different?

Some ducks are just too assertive and with Qwackers looking different too may have started this. For some reason if they look different they can get picked on. How is she doing this morning? and I hope you can find a good home for Indie. I forgot to mention never use any kind of meds that have pain relief ending with caine on poultry.

She was fine when I left this morning for work, and her head looked much better. I stopped at TSC this morning to get the spray that you recommended, but they were out of it. That stuff was $32 for a small spray bottle. I'll figure out something to use. I did find Purina Flock Raiser there and picked up a 50lb bag. I'm going to start mixing it in and gradually switch them over.

My husband is against us finding a new home for Indie, but agrees that they can't be housed together anymore. Today I split the ducks run so that Indie and Raj will have half, and Qwacks the other half. It is a fully enclosed 12'X12' area with a 40" high fence dividing the two. They will be able to see each other through the wire, so Qwacks won't be lonely. Hopefully Indie will not be able to get over the 40" divider. I've planned to clip his wings anyways. I am almost finished with it, Indie and Raj should be out full time next weekend.

I'm heading home now. Qwacks has been in the house all day, I left cartoons on for her. When I left she was looking over the side of the brooder watching Ice Age.

It is expensive stuff but last a long time. you can just continue to use neo or triple antibiotic although she may have shaving stuck to it. lol and you could also use a saline rinse but it's probably about healed by now. they are amazing how fast they heal. Good idea about the separation and still being able to see each other, now in time Raj may have to live on Qwackers side if Indie is indeed a drake, he'll most likely abuse her when he gets to mating age, never a good idea to have 1 duck with a drake. I wonder if Qwackers saw any of her ancestors on ice Age?

It looks better this evening. I will pick some of the spray up when I go back to TSC. It'll be good to have on hand.
I've spent a lot of time tonight watching Indie with Raj. So far he's not being mean to her, but he nearly scalped Qwackers in a few hours and I had never seen anything between them other than nipping. I will keep watching and he'll be on his own if he starts picking on her as well.

I gave them fresh strawberries as a treat tonight. Holy cow! They went nuts! The chicks loved them too.

Mine like strawberries too, and grapes. Glad to hear her head is looking better, hard to know what might have got Indie started, I do know that with chickens like polish and silkies can get picked on since they have all these feathers sticking out on top of their heads.

Qwackers really did have a HUGE crest compared to the rest of her body. He didn't pick anywhere else other than her head. I have been inspecting Raj for signs of picking, but she doesn't have any so far.
Everyone went nuts over the strawberries, I will have to try grapes. My chicks have had them, but not the ducks. Hopefully they'll like blueberries, I picked up 35 blueberry plants this past weekend! That is another one of the BIG projects that I have decided to take on, a 350 foot blueberry hedge

I wanted to create a barrier from my building and the garden so why not plant something that you can benefit from?

A nice yummy barrier I'm sure your flock will love you for it too. So now that your weaning Qwackers off the pred does she seem to be doing well with out it? do you think she seems sad not being with Indie and Raj?
