I have a chick that should be half polish half wyandotte but at a week old it looks just like a non crested chick. Should it have a little fluff on the head?

I have some that are 1/2 Polish and 1/2 Easter Egger, they hatched without the "perm" that they should have had. At about 4 weeks (Guestimate) they started to develope their perms. I was really disappointed until they started coming in. Be patient maybe they'll come in. Then sometimes they may not that is just a genetic thing, sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

The expression of a crest at hatch is dependent upon at least three things. Chicks that are heterozygous ( like your birds), combined with the rose comb, non-herniated skull will produce chicks that do not express a crest. The chances are good that all they will have as adults will be a tassel. Even if the comb is single- the chances are good they will express a tassel. Do not expect a big crest like you will see in polish.

Thanks. I knew that heterozygous crested do exhibit so degree of crest I just wasnt sure if they show on the young chick. I put the polish in with some hens who had been throwing empty eggs (bantam roo had issues covering all my largefowl hens). The eggs were kept for hatching after about 7 days had passed. So I hope the two lonely chicks were from the polish. A redtail got him.

I know this thread has been left alone for several months.
I am curious how these chicks turned out . I'm in a similar situation. Also, what do we define as "tassle."

Thanks.
