There is a craigs list ad for my area that has caught my eye for a second season, it is listed below. Anyone have any thoughts on why this make for a outstanding bird verses selective breeding with any meat egg cross?
"Last year, we astounded ourselves and a lot of our customers with our Dark Cornish/Ameraucana Cross chickens. We learned a lot. First, we were right on most counts. We were able to produce a hybrid farm chicken that is superior in all respects to any single breed.
The roosters grew faster than any Pure Breed of chicken. This is called "Hybrid Vigor". We were slaughtering meaty fryers in 12-16 weeks.....really niced size, and very tender. I started getting emails after 5 months from amazed customers who's pullets were beginning to lay.
We sold our flock of 30, year old laying hens, and kept back 30-40 prime pullets......real beauties, they were selected for size, appearance, and speed of growth. Along with them, we kept several of the fastest growing roosters. Then we added a new breed. We purchased 50 Black Australorps. We kept the 10 best hens , and several of the biggest roosters. We plan on continuing our 2X hybrids, and adding some of each of the other breed for a 3X Hybrid. This should help maintain the fast growth and large frame. The Australorps are a HUGE chicken, and they grow very fast. We are eager to see the results.
My spring pullets/hens are laying like mad right now....We are over 30 eggs a day from 35 hens. HUGE eggs.... that was one aspect that we had not planned on. ALL of the eggs are Large or Extra Large.....some are riduculous, and nearly as big as duck eggs....THE EGGS ARE A RANGE OF COLORS....BROWN, BLUE,TAN, AND GREEN.
If you are set up properly, this is the best time to start chicks.
We sold 1400 chicks last year. There will be a LOT of people selling chicks this year.....LOTS and LOTS. Poor breeding, and lack of proper management will mean that lots of folks will be buying and trying to raise inferior chicks. They will grow and mature slow, and eat a lot of feed. We know....we have made all these mistakes before. Don't throw your money away on cheap, slow growing, inferior mis-bred chicks. If the person selling them doesn't have a definite breeding plan....THE CHICKS WILL BE INFERIOR.....WE CULL THE POOREST 30%-50% OF OUR HENS AND ROOSTERS.....INTO THE CROCK POT.....NOT BACK INTO THE FLOCK TO PRODUCE INFERIOR CHICKENS. OUR CUSTOMERS WERE UNIVERSALLY THRILLED AT THEIR RESULTS.
IF YOU WANT PUREBRED CHICKS....BUY THEM FROM CACKLE HATCHERY IN MISSOURI. www.cacklehatchery.com THEY ARE CLOSE AND A GOOD HATCHERY, WITH A STELLAR RECORD OF QUALITY SERVICE.
Purebred chicks are fine if you have a plan....want a specific look....are nostalgic for a certain breed...want to enter them in the fair......
BUT.....if you like eatin' chicken as much as I do.....get a good 2X or 3X hybrid for a good fast growing bird. "
