Hello again everyone! This question is definitely about chickens but im unsure of where to post it.

To start im a crocheter, love to do it. Im a freestyler, meaning i very rarely follow patterns and when i do i modify them to my needs or liking (i always give credit to the original pattern!) such as for my great dane lolz who is enormously bigger than most of the dog patterns i have 😅.

My question is this: are crochet items actually safe for chickens (any age, size, sex). I want to ask the people who've been keeping chickens a lot longer than me (seeing as ive never kept them and dont currently have any).

My reason for this question is because crochet is not safe for a variety of species ive kept or would like to keep including but not limited to geckos (varying species), sugar gliders, and even rabbits. I dont want to risk hurting my chooks when i get them but i love to spoil my animals with fun, comfy, and sometimes fashionable things to wear!!!

Pictured are a few things ive made. The pink is a bean from fall guys that i made my daughter. And the gator "Crater" the gator is for my nephew "Gator"

They'll get their claws caught and it will be fiercely uncomfortable since it wouldn't allow feathers to move freely or drive them back into the skin.
They could also try to eat it and get bound up or choke.
Completely unsafe.

Which is why i wanted to ask here because google says crochet is safe for sugar gliders 🤦. My idea was to crochet a warming hut for chicks. Which came from the idea of wool hens for brooding. But i would never intentionally do something that would endanger an animal. So i will probably look at other things like fleece sheets around a tunnel or something. I still have a while before i get chooks so my wheels will keep turning. Thank you!

If you crochet a warming hut in wool and full it or felt it, it should be okay. You will want it to be durable, because it will need to be washed, but you could create a sort of faux mama hen brooder. You could create other objects out of felted crochet, including a crochet chick for company for small hatches and, if you have any need at any point, felted crop bras or saddles. And there was recently a photo shoot of blinged out hens, the ladies showing off what all they were purchasing with all that money coming in from expensive eggs! It was cute -- things that were simply used as quick photo props.
So there is no need to totally give up on the idea of crocheting for your hens, as you can make it work.

I used to love dressing up my late service dog for holidays and fun so maybe i will just crochet things for photo ops! Even with my little man i never left crochet items on him unsupervised. Too much worry that something would happen. My thought on the wool hen was to crochet the inside (not the floor but under where i would attach for stability) that way it keeps warmth in but the risk of getting caught is significantly reduced, eating would be another issue lolz

Unfortunately, crocheted items for the chickens would not be very safe. You could use your chickens when you get them, as models for some cute stuffed toys. I love the gator!
Thank you! I have yet to send it to him due to lack of funds for shipping. I made his mom a unicorn and his little brother a snake right before his surgery (the little brother had surgery) and sent them so he would have his snake pal for surgery day. Then i made the gator.
