Cross Breeding!

I have a Welsummer Cockerel and a mixture breed flock of hens including, Black Jersey Giants, Brown Leghorns, Pure Welsummers, and Welsummers X Light Sussex. If I bred any of these girls with the Welsummer Cockerel, would the offspring make particular good layers or any sex linked chicks? Thanks!

Hello and Welcome To BYC! You might also try posting on the Welsummer threads to see if anyone has done any of these crosses. In general the Leghorn X should give you your best layers, Wels themselves are hopefully sexable at hatch by color/markings, but some lines seem to be a lot easier to tell than others.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. None of those crosses will give you sex linked offspring, but if you cross your Welsummer cockerel with your Brown Leghorn you will likely get some good layers. If you want to breed some sex links, maybe you could get a Barred Rock hen and cross your Welsummer rooster with her.
