Cross/ Scissor Beak in Chick

Our Chicks are a little over a week old and doing well.
One of them has already developed Cross Beak. At this point, what if anything can be done to help correct this? Would trimming or filing a little now help in the future?

I recently had cause to research this. Unfortunately, it is caused by a difference in growth rate between the sides of the face. That means the earlier in age it shows up, the worse it will get as they age. It doesn't look bad right now, but it will be. I am a big fan of giving animals a chance, but even I euthanized the scissor-beaked chick that prompted the research--before it could suffer.

I will see how it goes for the next few weeks. It is eating and drinking fine right now but that could change. Hopefully, it will make it but without intervention or special feeding/ water needs it may not. Has anyone trimmed a chicks beak to help this issue?

Sure, I understand. You can use a dremel fitted with a grinding stone to remove excess beak. The one with the short, fat cone on the end works really well for shaping. The cylinders of sandpaper cause a lot of vibration of the head, so I don't recommend for small birds. Grind off small amounts at a time--the beak is basically like a fingernail laid over bone and the bone will bleed if you nick it.

Feed moistened crumble and give the chick extra time to eat. It is easier for them to scoop up and will help them get enough water.
