Crossbreeding...

Just wondering if anyone has tried a cross between a RIR and a Australorp? If so what was the outcome? Looking fo good egg laying ability and hear that both are good at that so thought about getting a few of both with a Australorp rooster. Any advice/comments welcome.

I wish you luck finding out. Last year I tried to find anyone with rock/wyandotte crosses and only one person responded. Oh, well though... I only have one rock out of 10 left now, so I doubt I will see many crosses.

Australorp Rooster and RIR hen. I have not tried that but suspect it will be a real good cross. The RIR have been bred for decades as good layers and my Australorps lay a lot of big eggs. If your basic stock is good, I think you will be very happy with the results.

I'd expect mostly black offspring but probably with a little red around the neck.
