Last year a lady sold me two rumpless Araucana roos and I had them free-ranging with my other chickens. Of the chicks I hatched out, several were rumpless. I've heard that rumplessness is dominant so am assuming that the tailed birds were sired by the non-Araucanas.

This year I have my Araucana roo Rumpless Wonder and his rumpless half-breed son Junior in a pen with assorted gals on the theory that all the offspring will be rumpless (or at least most?).

I believe rumplessness is an incomplete dominant trait. It does not pass on to all offspring. Some can hatch rumpless, some partial tailed and some full tailed (especially when matched to a tailed bird).

Sounds right to me. You will get some tailed birds and especially from the half breed son.
I have only crossed a tailed hen to a rumpless roo once and got a nice mix breed rumpless roo from it....with feathered legs but then the hen had feathering so that was not odd. But the rumpless feathered legged roo looks pretty cool.
