My young Rose Comb RIR, is the youngest, and least dominant, of my three cockerels. I've only had him about 16 days, and he's been in the coop with >16 hens, and 2 other roosters. The Australorp, is truly king of the coop. The small leghorn tries to be a tough guy, but, he's less than half the size of the Australorp, so, the pecking order, is pretty well set.
Neither of the secondary roosters were prone to crowing, in the other's castle. Last night, I thought I'd try housing him with some hens & pullets that are about his size. He crowed well, for his size, it was about what I expected. But, he was mean to the pullets, so I pulled him out, and put him in the big house, again.
Today, I let most of the chickens out, to free-range, and the RIR Roo, is finally able to strut his stuff, somewhat. But, in crowing, he seems a bit weak. Is that typical of a rooster, who hasn't had much crowing opportunity? I am guessing when they play second, or third, fiddle, they don't do any crowing, in the king's domain.
He seems very healthy, he's young, maybe 6 months old. Will he come into it, will it always be weak, as long as he is not king of the coop? Please enlighten me.
