Couple days ago one of my 1 1/2 weeks old cuckoo maran got attacked by a rat. She managed to get away but not without injury. She lost her left wing. There is about 1/2" of her humerus left and of that 1/4" is sticking from been covered by any flesh. I have applied Polysporin on her injured area. What should I do with that 1/4" portion of her humerus? Is it okay to leave it be or will that cause infection?

Thank you.

It should be removed at the shoulder. Try to keep some skin to cover the wound opening, but the bones should be snipped off as close to the joint as possible. She is going to need an antibiotic- Pen G. You will need to weigh her to calculate the dosage. Call the manufacturer if you must to see what dosing should be. She will need to be separated from the flock and kept inside where she can be warm, clean and dry. Keep the wound clean and dressed in some kind of ointment. I would try to keep it bandaged, but you may not have much luck with that. Vet Wrap is probably your best bet.

If she survives, you will need to put her on a high protein diet to aid in healing. After she finishes the course of antibiotics she will need to go on a course of probiotics to replenish her gut bugs. The last thing she will need is to survive a devastating injury only to die of a GI imbalance.

I had the exact same injury happen with an inch or two of bone sticking out, you could see down the hollow bone so we were concerned about infection, we kept it clean and bandaged and kept a close eye on it and the bone part fell off within a few months and skin grew completely over it. She uses her stump for balance now and out little kiwi bird (also a cuckoo Maran) is doing great. These birds are really good at healing themselves and I think removing the rest of the wing would be further trauma, the wings are almost made to break away like a lizard tail as a last ditch effort to escape predators (but won't grow back). Just keep an eye on it and if it gets infected a shot of antibiotics outta do the trick.

Thank you for the reply. I think I'll go with roostorf's suggestion. If I'm to cut it's bone all the way to it's joint I'll need to slice open part of it's muscle. I don't feel qualified to do so.
