I have five cuckoo maran chicks which are about two and a half months old… I’ve noticed an odd behavior. They sometimes fluff up their neck feathers. Any clues if it’s particular to this breed of chicken? I’ve never had them before. They all look like pullets to me. No one has a larger comb and they’re all pale. I’ve already discovered the roos and returned them.

Chickens do this all the time…. Especially after being picked up or mated with. No cause for alarm - kind of like a dog “shaking it off.”
Okay!! I’ve had RSLs for 10 years and I’ve never observed the neck fluffing like the marans. I was afraid maybe they were cockerels. My RSLs just fluff up all over and shake their feathers. These marans are hilarious and super entertaining!

How interesting! That’s exactly what I’m doing right now !
Four of them are all taking a dust bath in a flower bed… oh wait, the fifth one just joined them! They blend in perfectly in the dirt! LOL
I live in the city, yet a Cooper’s hawk live in the neighborhood, so I supervise after I get home from work.
Oh yeah, and my cats are afraid of them! The chicks that is.
