Hi, am new to owning chickens, I feed the girls laying pellets each day, but is it OK to feed them cucumber daily also. What are the best foods to feed daily along with the pellets?

Cucumbers, Apples(no core), sweet potatoes(only sweet potatoes), oatmeal, and plenty of other foods are great, just check BYC or Google before feeding them anything, apple seeds contains cianide, and potatoes are night shades, so none of those, and no night shades in general, with the exception of perfectly red tomatoes, green and orange still have the poison. Nothing you wouldn't eat your self, I'm not sure what you mean foods to feed daily along with pellets, but the best thing to mix in with your feed, is dried herbs, and oats. I also believe it is better to feed crumbles, it takes longer to eat, and keeps them occupied. If you have any questions about what i just said let me know lol.

Cucumbers, apples (with cores), potatoes, and tomatoes are all fine. Your extra cucumber this time of year will be good for hydration (watermelon, other melon, and summer squashes are too).

Very few of the things that are “poisonous to chickens” are poisonous to chickens.

Thanks for your help. I usually mix in oats, wheat and shell grit in with the pellets which they can eat all day long, and then give some corn and cucumber in the arvo. Maybe I will try crumbles and dried herbs too. They eat diced apple probably twice a week. I might make that daily and the corn two or three times weekly. What do you think? They both usually lay an egg each a day. I think they are about two years old. I have checked google but sometimes the info is confusing. One site says no raw garlic for example and another site says its good lol

Thanks, I just didn't want to be over doing the cucumber lol

I think about Apple seeds and cyanide is from what I understand they do contain it but they would have to eat more Apple seeds then they could Apple for it to really harm them. People always say not to give my goats apples because of that but they eat them just fine along with the acorns. Yeah they're a bigger breed but they eat more
My chickens love cucumbers especially if I put them in the fridge for a little while before they get some in the evening on a really hot day. And it's a good use for the extras from the garden
