My rooster was at best an irritant. He would over mate some of the hens to the point that their feathers would get rumpled... He attacked the pullets. He attacked my kids. He hid from predators (like dogs)... I'd put him in time out twice for a week at a time. To no avail. Last night was the final straw when he attacked my daughter again...

Now I'm sitting here feeling a funk. It's not guilt but it's the first time I've deilberately taken anything's life. Am I a softie? Maybe. I've always abhored killing anyting, but in the same breath I want to raise broilers and turn them into dinner. I'm mighty conflicted right now.

Agree with silkiechicken. Be gentle with yourself, you did the right thing

It was hard for me the first time too. It gets easier the more you have to do it, or at least it did for me. Don't feel bad about it.

What could you do? You can't exactly give away a mean rooster because he's a liability, he might hurt someone. I'm sure you did a better job putting him down than he might have gotten somewhere else.

He sounds like he was a little jerk!

Don't feel bad at all, you did your family, your hens (and the chicken gene pool) a big favor!

I can't stand a mean rooster! I get mad just thinking about it!

Yep, you were right. I have one that has to be culled this weekend. He is attacking me and all the hens and starting trouble with the other roosters. He is putting a lot of tension on the rest of the flock. I have grand children and they come first in safety. He has to go. You did the right thing.

You tried-he failed.
Some of them just don't want to get with the program.
You did what you had to do to protect your children-don't blame yourself.
