I have 20 hens and one rooster. He's the dominant leader of the pecking order obviously. Will I have a problem in the henhouse if I cull this roo? He's about 1 yr. old, can I stew him? Thanks

isnt that his job

Know what you mean...I have a mean ol roo but couldn't have babies if I didn't have him...Have you thought about locking him up when your friends are around? And if not I don't think your hen house is going to suffer without a roo...just no babies. Good luck. Maybe someone else has more experience then I do. Anyone?

Most of the time you will have very little trouble. my first roo was killed by a stray dog after the roo jumped the fence and the only trouble i had was it seemed like the hens took longer to go in at nite.
I have a welsumer roo thats mean to everyone im planing on getting rid of him by the end of summer and hope to get one thats a little more friendly.

Not sure about the possible hen house issue (guess it depends on your flock), but they should be just fine without a Roo. He'll make really good stewpot dinner though

This is entirely your call. I am not sure you are going to be all that happy with your dining experience with a 12 month old rooster, but maybe. I beleive that about 95% of the aggressive rooster issues are induced by humans.

If the bird was handled a lot he is likely to be far more comfortable with people and more likely (in my opinion) to add you to the flock. I have only culled one rooster because of aggression of the many many that I have had.

If you make sure you own the space in which you and he share it is likley that you will not have issues.

He may help a bit with sounding an alarm in predators are around so you may miss that. I like hearing a rooster crow, so I would not like to be without one in the flock
