Okay, I am a new chicken owner and I keep reading about culling. I do know you are talking about ending the chicken's life. But, in what way do you cull? I was just curious......

Most breeders when using the term cull are simply talking about removing the bird from the breeding pen and doing something different with it. It can mean selling it to a layer flock, using it in a layer flock, taking it to an auction etc. A lot of folks on this site refer to culling as killing which it certainly can be.

I believe that the most humane way is to use a sharp knife or ax and take off the head.

There are many other ways to do it as well. Some folks use a sharp scissor for chicks. Some feel comfortable with the use of co2 one can make up from some concoction.. I dont do it so dont know the mixture.

Hope this helps

Yes, what greathorse said. Culling doesn't always mean to kill. It means to remove from the flock or herd by killing, selling, re-homing, etc.
