Hi! About 2 weeks ago I was waiting to take a left out of my neighborhood and a mother malled with her young were crossing the road heading my direction into the neighborhood when a car going about 60 squashed the mom and a few of the babies. Since i was still in my neighborhood I just pulled my car aside and went over to the remaining duckings and herded them into my neighborhood. My husband quick went home and got a box to put them in so we could get them away from the road. We got them all. So since I have actually had ducks a couple times growing up I knew what I needed, ran to the feed store got duck feed, heat lamp, water feeder, ect.....made them a cozy home in my garage with a kids swimming pool and pine shavings. After the accident one of the ducklings died that day, I am pretty sure he got hit. But 2 weeks later the remanding 3 are doing amazing and getting so big! I am in minnesota summer right now so its very warm and I take them outside every day and let them run around in the grass with a little fence up, I am pretty sure they would run away if they got out. My plan is to just keep them until they can fly and let them go when they decide to take off. I am not positive but I'm pretty sure they were one a couple days old when it happened, they have not imprinted on me but they have on each other which is good for when they fly away. I am pretty sure they know me and love me because I spend a ton of time with them, I also give them nummy treats like blended up broccoli carrot, apple, kale and they love it but every time I try to pick them up they run to the other side or their pin and takes them a while to calm down in my hand if they even do calm down. I was just curious if anyone has any experience with a situation like this and I wonder if i let them out without a fence if they would just take off and run away from me. They eat their veggie treats right out of my hand so i dont think their too scared but who knows. Any advice would be appreciated!Thank you!
Samantha
