Hello, Howdy and Evening,
I just moved to WNY with my husband, we purchased a nice home on 20 acres of land 5 mins from my husbands parents. We have two ponds and 20 acres of land to make into a small farm that we would love to raise are kids up with. I have some knowledge of gardening and flowers, some vegetable growing, homemade syrups, jams and jellies. I want to get into something on the animal side and I have a friend who started a backyard chicken coop in urban illinois and I was hooked as she posted pictures of her lovely three ladies. I really want my own flock. I am going to start off with 6. BUT here is the kicker all in 6 months I have seen the amount of predators that lurk in my overgrown bushes (there is alot of TLC required on this land, previous owners just didn't have the green thumb is nicest way to say it).
I got fox, racoon and ohh look what is that hopping through my yard...oh no not a bunny, a mink.
So it almost put us off but then I have been reading of the people that have learned to live with them and their chickens. It just means I have a lot more work to get ready for my feathery sisters. So I am here to build a safe and healthy environment and to raise my kids with some ownership in raising something that is not themselves.
OH my babies are coming to me in June. I am waiting on 3 speckled sussex, 3 barred Rock.
