I went out to collect eggs yesterday and noticed blood sprayed all over one of the nest boxes and then blood smeared on the wall of another nest box. Judging by the egg laid in the smeared box, I checked out my Dominique hen (she lays a brown egg with cream speckles). She had blood on her feathers and a huge gash on her comb. I cleaned it up and put bag balm on it. That made it quit bleeding. In the sprayed nest box I found a small wood chip with blood on it and think she might have gauged her comb on it getting into the box, thereby also knocking it loose. She seems ok, eating fine, acting fine. So should I just watch it for infection? Today it looks black, like a scab. I don't think anyone is pecking at it.
Thanks in advance.......
