Okay, I'm not new around here but I was locked out of my account and need help so made a new account to ask this question.

I have a bird who has a cyst (or at least that's what it looks like) under her wing. It's about the size of a dime. When she messes with it, it starts bleeding quite a lot and doesn't stop for about a day. It took me a while to catch on that this was the same bird and not different ones getting injured. She seems in good spirits and otherwise fine but it seems like almost every week, she pulls the scab off and bleeds all over again. She's pulled all the feathers out from under her wing. I've seperated her to keep her from getting hurt by the others although they don't seem to care. I've also put her on ABX to see if that would kill whatever is in the cyst. Have any of you ever had anything like this? The bleeding has occurred a handful of times now and started again today. I seperated her last Thursday and she's been on ABX for 8 days. She's in with another bird who has permenant injuries so she has a buddy. Suggestions?

Are you sure that it is a cyst? I remember when I worked in a pet store we had some birds that had "ingrown" feathers that looked kind of like cysts. I think we soaked them and then the feather came out. I guess they had been broken under the skin or something. Do you think she is picking it because of pain, itching or something else? Is she affected in any other way? Terri O

No, I'm not sure it's a cyst. I just didn't know what else to compare the way it looks to. Yes, I think she's messing with it because it's bothering her. It seems like she picks it open again when the scab is starting to get old and probably starts to itch. It's raised a decent amount from her skin and she has no feathers around that area anymore. I guess it's possible that the feather is broken off under the skin but I would have thought that her body would have pushed it out over the last month or so. I don't know!? I'm not sure how to soak a chicken. I've given her a couple baths (more like showers where I hold her and squirt the area down with a low-flow hose). How would I keep her in the water long enough to really soak it? How long would that be?

Well how is she now?
I have a booted bantam with EXACTLY the same thing going on - separated so she doesn't get hurt ...I began to let her visit and stay in a smaller run next to her friends.
She and the friends now raise their hackles at each other and jump at the chicken wire so if this EVER resloves itself I'll have some re-intro problems I guess. Geez.

But 2 days ago she made a bloddy mess again just when I noticed this little sore shrinking, I guess she pokes so much the feather can't come out with the scab healing then being picked then healing then being picked .....

When I take a good look I see no feather nub, no pus, no gunk .... it's just a tiny bit raised with a little round scab.

Hope you update us on yours.

Still worried about my little one - she had about 2 weeks back with the gang , the spot was much smaller, no feather every did poke thru though.

2 days ago spot is larger and bleeding again. I washed her and put neosporin on it, she can keep a small adhesive bandaid on for a little while but she picks it off - I am worried she'll end up with it infected. She's back in the "hospital box" alone.
