My little Turken mix Peeps, has been sick last couple of days so this morning I took a poop sample (drove a little over an hour one way) So I paid them 21.00 bucks to check it out.

I know they aren't always right, false positives etc. They called me & were very nice said my Peeps had NO parasites. I'm freaking cause she's not eating, drinking very little. I've given her Avia Charge.
I had her in my room,so I took her outside for some fresh air.She poops a BIG round worm out!!! I've been checking out her poop, nothing I could tell.
I'm so PO'd !!! I did have some Eprinex pour on & tended to her. Hopefully she'll get to feeling better soon.
I wish Peeps would have pooped that out sooner ,LOL

So much for that lab test and your $21! Wonder if they even did it at all?!
Glad you know what's up (and out!) of your peep. Hope she gets better soon!!
:aww

Hi yall, she's drinking a bit & I saw her eat a bite or two.

I think she's enjoying the a/c and all the TLC. She's a sweety.
Yeah I wonder if they even did the test. The worker up there looked at me kinda funny when I brought that poop up there. I figure since they have an Avian vet they couldn't refuse, just wish they weren't so far away.
I'll let yall know how she's doing later on, thanks so much,Miriam

The fecal tests they do at hospitals test the feces for eggs. They remove the egg from the feces using a solution that has a density just right so that it allows the egg to float to the surface of the Poop/solution. They then place a microscope slide on that and then read it. Parasites have very distinct lifecycles--times where they are in different parts of the body at different times. Therefore, unless the worm that is present in the lower GI tract is currently producing/laying eggs, you may get a negative result on a fecal. A lot of vets will worm based on symptoms rather than results because of these facts. Also, unless you have an infestation-like kittens and puppies sometimes do- the small sample just may not have an egg in it.

Hope your little peeps is feeling better soon!

tiffanyh, thanks I didn't know that. I think maybe I need to get a microscope & do it myself just to save some $$ & gas LOL!
Didn't someone on here say they do their own or you can get training like from 4-H or something?

Im a certified vet tech so I do my own, actually I bring them to WORK!!! HA! Im only at teh vets in the summers now when the classes I teach are over.

You CAN do it yourself. Although honestly, after costs of miscroscope and time of learning, you might be better off just worming them on a regular schedule. You could do it at home though, I can get you the solution mix recipe and send you some instructions if you are so inclined!

I have a microscope but I'm not sure about checking out thier poop! but I am interested in how it goes down and what to look for. I know for a fact if there is an issue my husband will not go for paying a vet to check their poop.

tiffanyh, Oh that would be so nice if ya could.

That would be great.

Let me know what strength of microscope I'll need.( if that's the proper term)
Sometimes, I'm stuck out here without a ride so it's hard to get to town. I'm all for learning new stuff & saving money LOL
Just shoot me a email under my name thingy or if ya want to post it on here I'm sure other folks might be interested.Whenever you have the time, okay. That's so nice of you.
Thanks soooo much !
Miriam
