Daphne has had episodes of severe reproductive issues (passing soft-shelled eggs, mild egg binding, passing no-shelled eggs, etc.) ever since I got her 2 and 1/2 years ago. She typically has ”episodes” when winding down for the season. 1.2 mls of 23% Calcium Gluconate + warm baths have always set her straight.

Due to Covid-19, I have had issues getting a new bottle of Calcium Gluconate for Daphne. The bottles at the shop are expired, and Amazon was not being helpful either. I wasn’t too worried as Daphne’s issues usually happen in the fall. However, she’s having a “flare-up”, and I don’t have her favorite drug on hand. I have Tums Ultra and Caltrate, which both have Calcium Carbonate. Will either of these help?

Shes currently straining, and I feel an egg. She is able to defecate, and is still eating. She’s plucked feathers around her lower abdomen, making me think that she’s been feeling discomfort for longer than just today. She‘s 4 and 1/2 years old, and I’d rather she just stop laying than die from her reproductive issues.

Btw, the emergency Vet does not take exotics, the Vet that takes exotics is currently closed, and my Vets stick to cats and dogs.

Are any of the calcium sources I have on hand useful? If so, how much do I give her?

Note, she already has Oyster shells available at all times + layer pellets. She lays perfectly normally until “periods of transition”. I think her body wants to take a summer break, but isn’t handling it well. I’m off to give her a warm bath and await your advice. Thank you in advance!

So, funny story. I had gently massaged her abdomen, had a quick feel to feel that she did, indeed, have an egg stuck, then plopped her in her warm pool while I grabbed the Tums and some lube. I fought with her to get her to take the Tums (dissolved in water), then used the lube to gently investigate... no egg! I went back over to the pool and found a GIANT soft-shelled egg hiding against the ramp. Poor Daphne! At least this crisis has passed (literally) for now. I‘ll be on the hunt for Cal. Gluc. tomorrow after work!

Amazing what a little bath can do ! So great you know your girl so well enough that you can help her this way, especially after finding out you didnt have her usual fix ! X

How’s she doing?

All tucked in for the night and eating her nighttime mealworms with enthusiasm! She definitely rated her treatment this evening as “very, very poor”, but seems to be doing ok for now. Her usual “danger period” lasts about 1 week. She had some intermittent straining last night, but I thought she sorted herself overnight. Clearly not. I will be on high alert for a bit! Thank you for checking in ♥️
