Ok, I have 8 chicks right now. 3 Buff Orps, 2 Ameraucaunas, 1 EE, 1 RIR, and 1 Black Jersey Giant. My local feed store has barred rocks in and I want to get 1 or 2 but my family isn't down with it. The RIR and BJG are 4 weeks old and the other 6 are 2 weeks old. We are almost done building the coop which is big enough for about 10 chickens and we will probably have to sell some because we don't know which are roos and which aren't. (We will not have any roos for a while, just pullets or hens). How do I convince my family to get the barred rocks? Thanks!

Chicken math! HAAAAAHAHAHAHA! I'm very new at this, but can relate completely. My husband and I agreed on 3 chickens to start. We knew we wanted a Silkie and found a local farm that had Silkies and Barred Rocks. Perfect. We came home with 3 Barred Rock chicks and a black Silkie Pullet. When we stopped at the feed store on the way home, he wants to look at the chicks they have there and we end up with a Polish, making our original agreed-upon brood total 5.

I'm totally trying desperately to avoid chicken math. We were going to do 3. Just 3. Get to the feed store, leave with 4. I went back this week to get more starter crumbles and guess what! New shipment, with some of the breeds we'd originally wanted. I managed to leave without any... but only because the still-being-built coop will only hold 3 well and 4 ok. 5 or 6 is a definite no.

This year at least
