Date marking eggs?

Hi all,
I'm new to chickens and though my hens aren't yet laying I'm thinking. Is it common to date mark eggs as you collect? I mean, is it something most of you do? Just a thought as I've gotten so used to marking my duck eggs as I collect them this week for hatching.

Its common to mark eggs with pencil, other writing utensils vary by opinion

Haha thanks! I guess that was one reason I wondered, didn't want to ruin the eggs and give family/friends lead poisoning.

Pencils have not had lead for a very long time I use wax pencils myself but don't need to mark eggs often as my volume is high enough I mark trays. and I use a sharpy for that. I tried sharpies on eggs last year but got a few bad hatches and had to blame it on something so the sharpie got it lol.

I write on them with pencil. However I also have one of those date stamps that they use at libraries and you can buy a food grade ink pad and use that to stamp eggs as well.
I guess it depends on how high your egg turnover is..if they are going to sit in your fridge for awhile then I would date them, otherwise I wouldn't worry about it, they last quite awhile.

I also LOVE the stamp idea and ha wondered if there was a safe ink!!

Speaking of.. How long DO eggs last? I know I've read before, but while we're at it this is more fun.

I forget where I got mine. Probably Amazon.
Essentially any stamp pad will work that is non-toxic. I've never had the ink bleed through the shell though it's always possible.
