i've been slowly relinquishing the responsibilities of feeding our chicks and let my daughter do it ... i had surgery yesterday so today she did everything

first we got some fresh grass clippings and tossed a bunch in the cage with them

then refilled their feed ... then my daughter wanted to hold one and pet it .. i tell her the best way to get them near enough to pick up is to get them a special treat

so i go inside and get a piece of bread .... she holds it out and they start pecking at it .... as i am watching her - she starts to slowly raise the bread just a little after each peck

she gets it to a height where they have to jump straight up to get the bread .... it was pretty funny --- especially when one chick would bring down a large chunk and the other chicks would try to steal it from her

chicks chirping and little girls giggling is a great way to start the morning

My boys love their chicks. They are still in the house, and every morning my 7 year old who gets up early always has a chicken on the couch! They will be the egg gatherers! Its so nice to get them used to people. I'm sure your kids will always remember the chickens!

i was checking on my yesterday - even though i could barely walk

i feel 10 times better for it though .... doc was so right when he said "even though it hurts like hell, you will heal faster if you do just a little more every day until you are back to normal"

Hoping for a speedy recovery! Chickens are definately entertaining, we also have 12 week old kittens. Forgot how funny they can be with their jumping and playing. Of course the kittens have not met the chicks yet! That wouldn't be very funny!
