I brought home my first two chicks today. My coop is the Tavern. My chicks are Ameraucana's. I named them Miranda and Carrie.
I got my coop all set up with bedding, food, water, some treats and put them in !
The doggies were all excited to see what was happening. Round and round they went. One of the chicks found the ramp and up she went. After I put the dogs inside the chicks settled in a bit, both were down and peeking around. Then without fail mother nature had to rain down on us. It down poured!!! I mean flood the yard down pour. After it slowed a bit I went out to scurry them up the ramp for night, wasn't quite dark, but would rather them be dry then out in the weather. What do you know, they were both up in the nesting boxes!!! My chicks are smart!!!

My question being this ~ How do you keep your food, grit and treats dry? All four sides of the run are exposed.

Hi,

I'm really new to this too. My chicks are 2 wks. But I've been researching quite a bit and talking to as many people as I can. I'm not sure if I understood you correctly, but your chicks shouldn't be outside or in a run. They need to be in a brooder until they get all their feathers. Usually around 4-6 wks. It's important to keep them warm with a heat lamp and red light. Start out at 95 degrees then decrease by 5 degrees each week until you reach outside temp. The red light helps to keep them calm and to sleep better than a white light.

Hope that helped.
