This is a learning thing. Also these eggs came during a -22 cold snap.

Have you tried setting marbles in the water tray? This helps reduce the drowning issue, and the chicks simply drink in the spaces between the marbles.

I am going to find some marbles today. I may also try a pyrex baking pan under the wire. the additional height will require a temp adjustment.
