The egg was late for pipping, but I finally noticed some progress today. I saw it moving a few hours ago, and was reassured there was life. I had to move a baby chick who needed help and thankfully saved that one. I was watching the egg and noticed no more movement and the membrane was turning brown. I took the egg out to see if I could assist since it seemed like there was trouble zipping. No movement at all. No chirping. It was so dry in there without me even touching anything. I finally started to poke gently with q tip and could see its beak and eyes shut but no movement. No chirping nothing. I am 98% sure it was dead so I threw out… I am feeling horrible. Im panicking it wasn’t dead but I mean there was absolutely no movement. I feel so sad.

I hatch a lot, but just had that happen. It was like the egg was shrink-wrapped so the chick couldn't move after it pipped. I could hear it now and then too so thought it was trying. I hadn't opened the incubator, so it couldn't have gotten shrink-wrapped, yet it was. I got it out the next day, but it was dead. It was encased in the membrane and somehow suffocated itself. Yet, I had 12 others hatch just fine.

Sometimes we never know why this happens, but a lot of us like to think that had these chicks hatched, they might have had issues like being crippled for life, living a shortened life, or having heart issues, etc.

Yes. I’m trying to remind myself this is apart of life/ nature.
It’s just hard to accept:(
I’m a first timer so I guess I’m doubting my abilities but would you agree that if I was to poke at it and there was no chirping , movement and completely dried down, it was dead?
