Got to work this morning, and nothing again. No pips, or peeps, no movement. Temp a little higher now (higher being 98.something, mind you), and humidity right at 50, so I grab some more warm water and add it. But nothing has moved or shown life since day 17, so I think there's no way they're going to hatch at this point and be healthy. My temps and humidty's been all over the place....
I pretty much ignored the bator all day, but at nap my aide and I kept hearing this peeping. I couldn't tell if it was birds outside, or coming from the bator. So my aide looked in and didn't see anything. After nap I opened up the cabinet where the bator is, like I always do to check on it, exepecting no really changes from before nap, and I see this!
I was completely stunned!
I had given up, thinking they were all dead, and I was already planning what questions to ask on here after doing the eggtopsy for better success next year. I called all the kids over, and we all watched it, I even told the classes next door to come over and see. It was awesome, zipping along very quickly, several of the students got to see it pecking up around the shell, which was a wonderful. A few students even got to see it hatch and I grabbed some photos. It was awesome for my kiddos, I was so pleased!
We all had a hard tearing ourselves away from the bator when it was time to go home.
I was a little worried about this big red bludge around its bum. I thought it might the be yolk sak that wasn't fully absorbed, but it appears to be gone now, so I think the chick absorbed it. If I get concerned again, I'll post a pic. He's moving all over the bator now, and I can hear others in the shell peeping!
Two more have pipped, althought one appears to have pipped the front end.
I know that's bad, does it have a chance? The other pip appears to be fine. Another question: There was a lot of water right around the bottom of my bator; it appeared to be leaking. Is this normal? Should I worry? Humidty hasn't changed much, just wondering if anyone else had expierenced that. Maybe it leaked out somehow when the chick was born.
So I am off to buy a box for a brooder, and a light to heat it with (I already have food for a day or so). I'm hoping the chicky will be ok on its own overnight. Thanks for all the help from everyone on here! I would never gotten a single chick without your help! I'll post more pics as they hatch and get fluffy
So exicited for my chick! I don't want to leave it!!!!!
