I was given pheasant eggs, and had a chicken sit on them. She was more than willing, and very protective of the eggs and devotedly sat on them. There were 4 eggs, and all hatched. However, the chicken killed 3 of them. We were peeking in on her from time to time, and saw her peck one to death. Yet, she was still protecting it when we ended up removing her from the nest and took the last egg that was hatching later than the others, in. It was very strange. I did read that chickens can accidentally peck babies too hard, and I think that is what happened here.
Anyway, the strange thing about this last pheasant egg was that it hatched from the bottom. The whole egg was upsidedown, but the other 3 were not. The baby hatched fine, and warmed up and dried off. He is almost a day old now, but is not very strong. He can drink and eatwith help, and tries to walk, but he is just flopping around. He will finally get good posture for a few seconds, but then lays down and sleeps. I noticed that he is standing correctly for longer periods of time each time he does it, but I am under the impression that he should have more strength than this. I got my baby chickens when they were very young from TSC, but they were walking around already. This little guy is fighting, but I don't want to be making him suffer.
So, should I just keep holding him to help him eat and drink, and let him try to work this out? Like I said, he does seem to be holding his head up and walking better for more and more seconds each time he tries, but it looks very rough on him.
