Well, a few days ago I lost another hen. Same as before, daylight kill, the neck eaten and a little of the body. Was still thinking hawk, but set a live trap on the outside of the fence near where the hen was killed. Next morning there was a ticked off feral tom cat in the trap! Now it could just be coincidence that I caught a feral tom the day after a hen was killed, but then it could just be a coincidence that my .22 was nearby too. Hopefully my chickens are a little safer now, and today we brought home some chicks to replace those really nice barred rock hens.
