DE benefits?

I'm new to all this. Can someone please explain the use of DE? I assume this is diatomaceous earth? What is the benefit of using it in the coop, under the pine shavings? Is it for absorption, odor control? Where is the best place to buy it?

It can kill some insects,and helps absorb moisture.
It's never been proven to do anything else

I use it in the coop to dry out the poop and in the pen in the dust bath area it does seem to work on lice/mites and drys the poop so less flies we got ours on line. Make sure to get the food grand DE not the stuff for pools.
