I updated my last thread about Day old broody behavior but it looks like no one saw it.

Found 1 dead chick that hatched yesterday but the other 10 eggs have not hatched. It was peeping this morning but not this afternoon. Today is day 21. Do eggs hatch early? It looked healthy

I am very sorry for your loss. I just scrolled through page titles and did not see your other thread.

Does the chick appear to have any external injury as if the hen did this? If not, there are so many scenarios. A big one is it may have been stepped on. As for the others, If she's a finicky broody I would not bother her and give them to day 23 then candle. If she's easy going, lift her gently and see if you see any pips. If not, candle a few to get an idea where they are at.

What is the temperature of the heat source? It looks like case of Hypothermia the way the neck is. Could you maybe post a picture of the chick on solid flat ground if not too late. Hatching early is normal. Only a day early though.

No obvious injuries. I'm thinking the stepped on theory is the most likely.

I admit I went out a lot and watched her. I'm not going anywhere near her for the next 2 days. I wonder if her agitation at me caused her to step on it. But there were 11 eggs, maybe it is just crowded. I tried moving her and the eggs very briefly 2 days ago to a brooder area (that is what I did in May, the last time she went broody & it was fine) but she didn't want to stay so moved them all back, very carefully of course!
