Dead chicken and malformed eggs

When I went out to check on my chickens this afternoon one was dead laying in the run with no visible causes. After collecting eggs I saw that two were very odd shaped. Could this be something contagious that I need to worry about?

Odd shaped eggs can be common in older chickens, or with shell gland problems. Here are 2 good articles about egg quality problems:

The only way to know what killed your chicken for sure would be to get a necropsy done by a poultry lab or the state vet. Here is a link with state poultry labs:
