DEAD PEAHEN I CANT FIGURE OUT THE CAUSE

PLEASE HELP. Hi this I know this is for chickens but I really need advice from someone who knows peafowl. This is my first time with peafowl, I hatched them from eggs. My peahen was perfect and healthy until one day she became a little lethargic and noticed her neck was swollen not at the very top by her beak but not as low as her crop. I isolated her somewhere safe and warm until I figured out what to do next or could get her to a bird vet . I had to work for a few hours and when I got home she was dead. Now I’m worried because I don’t want anything to happen the the male. I had just moved them into a new coop a few days before so I stopped putting him there in case it was something she picked up in there. I’ve looked up so many things but nothing seems to fit her symptoms, she showed no other symptoms that I’m aware of, she’s was eating and drinking and pooping normally. What happened and should I be worried about my male? I thought I heard him weezing a bit yesterday but maybe now I’m just paranoid.

I'm sorry to hear about your peahen! I'm afraid i cannot help, as i don't have experience with peafowl, but maybe @casportpony could help as she has peafowl.

Welcome. What state are you in? Most state vets can do a necropsy to look for a cause of death if you can keep the body cold, not frozen, and take it in M-F. Was the swollen neck soft as if air was trapped under the skin? Very sorry for your loss. This is a list of state poultry vets to contact:

I had someone else ask my about air in her skin, I said no at the time but maybe I’m not sure. It didnt really feeel like that to me , it was sort of squishy and flexible but kind of firm too? I’m not really sure, if it had been air what is the cause of that?

I know what you mean. There have been a few that I felt that way about.

If it was air, that can be a sign of a ruptured or leaking air sac, from a bump injury. In people, it is called subcutaneous emphysema.

Interesting. Thank you for that information. I think I’d feel better if that was is it because at least it’s not contagious or anything.
