Well, my proactive hunting yielded another predator last night. Unfortunately, not the elusive raccoon that I have been hunting the last week, but a pregnant possum. That's all I needed, more hungry possum babies.

I saw a possum across the road last night. BIG THING.

Hubby was outside too. My mother in law said never try to use a pitchfork on one, says they have tough skin.

It was headed our way, then saw us/heard us and ran back. I said "See... it is coming for my chickens!!!!"

My jack russell named Bodhi is quite the killer..well not of my chickens but just about any other critter, even the cats!

He can actually kill coons that probably weigh more than him.. he just gets a hold of their throat and hangs on till they expire..

If you have ever had the "pleasure" of owning this type of dog you will understand. he can be very much the pain in the *##......
Some mornings I would pay you to take him!
He will follow me every a.m while I do chores and he likes to sneak feed and drink out of the waterers.. (jealous)

well I look out to my chicken barn and see something lying on the ground... oh no a chicken? nope a possum that he killed! good boy! now I know why I love him here....

I think maybe those possum babies were in her pouch.

Wow, I didn't even think of that! You are probably right. The babies seemed so tiny and pink that I failed to even consider that, not being an expert on marsupials.

Good Call!

I live trap the possums and racoons and take them to the park! At night when my chickens go into the coop by themselves, I just close it up. I don't have any problems with predators at night - only in the day. Big hawks will attack a full grown chicken. Small hawks went after my chicks. I shot the hawk. We also have coyote. I'll shoot a coyote because they are dangerous to children, but I have not seen too many during the day. Having trouble with rabies in the fox and coyote.

It IS illegal to kill/harrass or otherwise disturb a bird of prey. If you must protect your flock its called SSS
Shoot
Shovel
and
SHUT UP!
Though IMO its not a good thing to kill ANY bird of prey. For ANY reason.

Miltonchix is right. There's too many protected flying predators to even think about shooting at any of them. Shooting birds of prey should be a no-no.

It wasn't just the act of killing the bird. I'm not judge and/or jury. My comments were directed at the casual posting of the commision of an illegal act. You can't get anymore self incriminating than that.
