The chickens didn't go back to the new coop. They went to the old coop but the door was closed so they roosted on the fence. Came home to find a trail of blood and feathers and one missing rooster.

I'm so upset. How can I get my girls to go back to the new coop at night so this doesn't happen again??

First sorry for your loss,

I would lock the girls in the new coop for a few days so they know that it is home I hope that helps.

What's a few days? Cause I hAd them in thre for three days and they still went back. We can't remove the old coop. Maybe the rooster was leading them back there. Maybe I'll try cooling them up again.

Try it for at least a week. I'm guessing you don't have a run attached to the coop. If you do, you could let them out in the run during the day and they have no choice but to go back in the new coop at night if they didn't want to roost outside (or, you could put them back in). If you free range, then they'll just have to be in the coop.

I think I wanna try to hatch some eggs from my flock. So our rooster can live on in some way or another. Our flock is a random assortment of hens to our white Silkie roo. Babies should be interesting. I don't even know if they are fertile but I should do it soon. Hens stay fertile for 2 weeks right?
