I have two hens setting on a nest together. The tom is also in the same enclosure. I came home and 2 poults were on the opposite side of the enclosure dead and pecked, only one of those was completely out of its egg. One hen(the one who has only been setting about half as long as the other gal) was out and about with the tom. The 3rd chick was in the nest.
So, the tom absolutely cannot get to the nest because he is way too big. So now I'm not sure if the hen who has been setting longer or the one who has been setting shorter pecked them to death.
Is this common for first timers or was it maybe because they were both sharing the same nest and the 2nd hen knew that they weren't hers?
And in the future should I separate the others from the hen who is setting?
