Just a random update about the hardware I chose for my coop…

3 years ago I built my own coop out of pallets and salvaged wood, as per a populate recommendation here, I put it all together with deck screws, for shallower fastenings I used stainless steel.

Last week I modded my coop for the first time, opening up one side to allow more air. The hot weather has come fast and hard and my 3 year olds didnt seem to be taking the heat as well as they did as pullets.

For the most part the deck screws were fantastically easy to remove, saved one that was in the bedding and in a corner that occasionally got wet. That one had rusted, i had to very carefully remove it since the drive was crumbling. In the end I got it out with too much issue, but it was unexpected. All the stainless steel has held up spectacularly!

I took out one shutter and replace it with hardware cloth. Probably only took about 1/2 hour without an electric drill.

If I did it again, I would still go with the deck screws.

As a random side note, the flooring of my coop is made from trex dex off cuts, it handles moisture beautifully :D
